April 13th marked thirty-five (35) years since La Soufriere Volcano erupted in 1979.

To commemorate the Anniversary, and to raise awareness about geological hazards, the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO), will collaborate with the Seismic Research Centre (SRC), of the University of the West Indies, the Soufriere Monitoring Unit (SMU), and the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Red Cross Society, to host a week of activities during the period 28th April -  2nd May, 2014.

This year’s Volcano Awareness Week events will boost awareness about the hazards associated with living on an island with a ‘live’ volcano. While the volcano in recent years has been quiet, it is still active. The activities planned seek to engage students, members of the vulnerable communities and the general public, in both the science behind the volcano and the safety needed to prevent harm. The members of the media will also be trained in the science, safety, broadcasting of geological hazard information and how to deal with issues that may arise in the event of a volcanic eruption.
