Sergeant Henry Providence, the second in command at the Police Traffic Department, is warning persons that if they are caught driving without their seatbelts, they can be fined up to two thousand dollars for a first offence, and up to five thousand dollars if they are caught a second time.

Sergeant Providence also stated to NBC news that his department will be conducting regular stop-and-search patrols during the carnival season, to ensure that motorists comply with the law.

He also noted that the issue of unfastened seatbelts is one that is of major concern to his department and he is calling on officers located on the outskirts of Kingstown, to assist in the drive.
