The Barbados Meteorological Services, through the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Meteorological Services, has issued a flood watch for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines from 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday 7th to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday 8th December.
A flood watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding. It does not mean that flooding will occur, but that it is possible.
The axis of an approaching surface trough is expected to move across the islands of the Lesser Antilles later tonight into early tomorrow.
As a consequence, cloudy to overcast skies, periods of rain, pockets of moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms, along with occasional gusty winds are expected to spread across Saint Vincent and the Grenadines during the next 12 to 24 hours.
Rainfall accumulations of 2 to 4 inches (50 to 100 millimeters) with higher amounts in mountainous areas are possible.
Due to the already saturated nature of the soils, landslides and flooding are likely. Residents living in landslide prone areas, and in areas along the riverbanks such as Buccament Bay, Rose Place, South Rivers, Spring Village, Vermont, Roucher Bay, Mesopotamia, Sandy Bay, Georgetown, Mt. Young, Byera, Gorse, Chateaubelair, Buddy Gutter, Calliaqua, Barrouallie, Layou and Fitzhughes, are urged to be on the alert and take all necessary precautions.
The flood watch will be updated as necessary.
The National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO), through the Barbados Meteorological Services and the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Meteorological Office will continue to monitor the situation.
