A National Consultation to review the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Tsunami Warning Protocol will take place at the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) office on Tuesday, 8th October - Wednesday, 9th October, 2019 beginning at 8:30 a.m. each day.

The Opening Ceremony will take place on Tuesday, 8th October, 2019 at 8:30 a.m.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Mrs. Yvette Pompey will make remarks at the Opening Ceremony.

The Consultation to review the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Tsunami Warning Protocol forms part of NEMO’s ‘UNESCO IOC CARIBE EWS Tsunami Ready Pilot Project’ being implemented on mainland Saint Vincent.

The two-day national consultation is being facilitated by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) with support from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Caribbean Tsunami Information Centre (CTIC), and the United States Agency for International Development Office for Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA).

The Consultation targets senior officers from across various government ministries including: Agriculture, National Security, National Mobilisation, Housing, Education, Tourism, Economic Planning, Transport and Works, Foreign Affairs, the Customs and Excise Department, the Argyle International Airport, the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Meteorological Services, the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Authority, the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Port Authority, the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Hotel and Tourism Association and representatives from the coastal communities of Union Island, Rose Place and Diamond.

The objectives of the Consultation are:

  • To present the revised Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Tsunami Warning Protocol to the National Stakeholders
  •   To advance the finalization of the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Tsunami Warning Protocol through the process of highlighting the roles and responsibilities of the National Stakeholders as outlined in the document and to get their feedback and consensus
  • To have a completed St Vincent and the Grenadine’s Tsunami Warning Protocol
  • To provide National Stakeholders with the opportunity to familiarize themselves with their roles and responsibilities as outlined in the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Tsunami Warning Protocol through a Tabletop Simulation Exercise which will be held on October 9, 2019.

Additional Information:

The Tsunami Ready Pilot project is supported by the Caribbean Tsunami Warning Programme and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) with funding from USAID/OFDA.

The scope of the project includes the coastal communities of Kingstown, Arnos Vale (including Sion Hill Bay), Indian Bay, Villa, Calliaqua, Ratho Mill, Brighton, Diamond, Stubbs and Argyle in the South to South Eastern section of mainland Saint Vincent. The Project activities are also extended to Union Island in the Southern Grenadines.

The objectives of the Tsunami Ready Programme are:

  • To develop Tsunami inundation and evacuation maps in the project communities
  •   Facilitate public awareness activities to encourage discussions and validation on Tsunami Evacuation map(s) for all project communities.
  • Carry out educational activities in support of Tsunami Ready (TR) Guidelines.
