The Energy Conservation Fund was established in 2008 as part of the Government’s response to rising energy costs in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines due to escalating crude oil prices on the international market.

A Capital sum of $1 million per annum was allocated over a 3-year period (2008-2010) to develop an Energy Conservation Program aimed at converting the threats from high energy prices to opportunities to utilize more of the indigenous resources to produce energy, provide training and create jobs, clean up the environment, secure transfer of technology, and further develop Small Medium Enterprises and micro-finance programmes.

Under the Energy Conservation Fund, the Energy Unit in the Prime Minister’s Office was established to assist with the formulation and implementation of Government’s policies related to energy, and to coordinate specific activities related to Government’s renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives.
