Search and rescue may be defined as the employment of available personnel and facilities in rendering aid to persons and property in distress; hence it is the main function of the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Coastguard. The Coastguard is the only local established search and rescue agency, and is a member of the Regional Southern Sector for the coordination and response to search and rescue cases. Whenever there is such a case, the Rescue Coordination Centre in Trinidad is responsible for the coordination and use of assets to render assistance to whomever is in distress.
